Ox Alpha 牛来模型已被智谱认领
(Aug 26): The new AI model that’s swept to the top of online usage charts with high performance at zero cost was created by China’s Z.AI Co, also known as Zhipu.
The company on Wednesday confirmed speculation that the Ox Alpha model is a new iteration of its GLM series and said it will release the weights for it tonight in response to queries by Bloomberg News.
Still free to use, Ox Alpha surged to the top spot on AI marketplace OpenRouter’s leaderboard, more than doubling DeepSeek’s use. The plan to openly release its weights, the parameters that guide decision-making in artificial intelligence systems, will allow developers to build other products on top of the model.
Ox Alpha emerged over the weekend as an uncredited release on OpenRouter — the biggest launch in that marketplace’s history — and quickly gained traction among curious observers and users. It’s a reasoning model designed for coding and agentic tasks, and it can process text, image and video input, according to its description. Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe Inc, which is acquiring OpenRouter, called the stealth-mode release “very impressive".

Ox Alpha is one of a series of powerful models launched by Chinese firms this summer that have shown benchmark-topping performance at a much lower cost than US rivals, intensifying the AI race between the world’s two largest economies. The code name for the model was inspired by a popular film recently released in China, titled Niu Lai — or “Ox Comes” — according to Z.ai.
The Beijing-based company reprised the practice used by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Xiaomi Corp this year of releasing a new model without initially claiming the credit. By not publicising their ownership at the outset, tech companies can test the waters for new services, allowing more freedom to experiment with their frontier products.
The company is giving everyone a week to use Ox Alpha for free and has not yet specified the cost thereafter. It will issue its first detailed earnings report on Monday, covering the first six months since its public listing in January.
The launch of Ox Alpha highlights the breakneck speed of Chinese product releases as companies advance their technology. Earlier this month, Z.ai released its latest flagship model, GLM-5.3, which the company said can rival Anthropic PBC’s Fable 5 on some benchmarks.
